MDP CONTRIBUTES TO THE GLOBAL DISCUSSIONS AT UN SECURITY COUNCIL IN NYC

A group of MDP/GC students from Al Farabi KazNU have been invited to witness a historical speech of the President of Kazakhstan. President Nursultan Nazarbayev will speak on non-proliferation of nuclear weapon at the UN Security Council, in New York City on January 18, 2018. This speech coincides with Kazakhstan’s presidency over the UN Security Council – another historical event for the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The UN Security Council. Under the Charter, the Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security around the world. The UN SC has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with UN Security Council decisions.

The students have come from Al Farabi KazNU to New York City as a part of MDP/GC educational academic exchange program. During ten-days visit they are to meet and learn from leading practitioners and academics across multiple disciplines.

The 70th anniversary of the UN Charter on Human Rights

KazNU and the Global Hub of the UNAI for Sustainable Development held a round table on “The Role of the Peacekeeping Forces in Ensuring Peace and Human Rights”.

Participants of the round table were: the second secretary of the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Farhad Haidari, the UN representative in Almaty Vlastimil Samek and the national information and communication specialist Sergey Karpov, representatives of the Ministry of Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan represented by major Rustem Suleimenov, representatives of the scientific community of the University and participants of the UNAI program .

During the round table, the participants discussed topical issues of the UN peacekeeping contingent, the role of UN organizations such as Academic influence in addressing human rights and security issues, the contribution of UNAI KazNU to sustainable development, the activities of youth structures as the UN Model – The New Silk Road in Strengthening Peace and Rights man in Central and South Asia. Scientists of Kazakhstan universities and representatives of the Center for Partnership for Peace of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan analyzed the problems of regional security, the role of Kazakhstan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in supporting the activities of the organization.

According to the peacemaker Rustem Suleimenov, at present modern students not only can take a course, but also take part in the mission with the desire to help people.

The role of women in the modern world

On December 5, 2017 in the faculty of international relations in KazNU at al Farabi the round table dedicated to “Gender equality and eradication of violence: enhancement of women rights and freedom in the modern world”. The round table was organized with by the UN assistance center in KazNU in cooperation with UN Women Department in Kazakhstan as part of the “16 days against violence” project.

Kazakhstan’s way to a nuclear-free world

A round table “Kazakhstan way to a nuclear-free world” with the support of the mission of the Department of public information of the UN in Kazakhstan was held at al-Farabi KazNU.  KazNU is a global hub for sustainable development initiative United Nations “Academic Impact”, and is active, aimed at supporting ten internationally accepted principles of the UN relating to human rights, literacy, sustainability and conflict resolution.

By the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s accession to the UN

A solemn meeting dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s accession to the United Nations was held in KazNU.

On the occasion of the significant date, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov sent a congratulatory letter to the participants of the solemn meeting and wished success. The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Department of Public Information of the United Nations, diplomatic missions, international organizations, akimat, teachers and students of universities in Almaty.

A round table on ” Kazakhstan’s accession to the non-permanent membership of UN Security Council”

February 7, 2017 at the Faculty of International Relations of al-Farabi Kazakh National University was held a round table on ” Kazakhstan’s accession to the non-permanent membership of UN Security Council”. The invited guests were representative of public information of the United Nations in Almaty V.Samek, Chairman of the Public Fund “Poligon – 29 August” N. Boztaev.

Vlastimil Samek highly appreciated Kazakhstan’s contribution to peace, global stability, and stability for years of independence.

25 years together

Model United Nations, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the accession of Kazakhstan and Central Asian countries in the UN. “Model UN – New Silk Way” – is a popular global program that runs in a mode of brainstorming and student conference, as well as the best school, opens up a whole world of ideas, opinions, experiences, offering unique opportunities for self-realization and self-expressi on, validation and development of intellectual and creativity, knowledge and creative thinking.

Model UN – New Silk Way allowed to reproduce the United Nations work in real time, by the students of different universities of Almaty. On one day, students transform into diplomats act as representatives of the UN.

 

198 PLACE – AL-FARABI KAZAKH NATIONAL UNIVERSITY FOR THE FIRST TIME IS TAKING PART IN THE UI GREEN METRIC RANKING 2016

 UI GreenMetric released the results of its UI GreenMetric World Ranking Universities on December 29th 2016. The results are computed from information provided by universities online. This year the information is organized under Six main categories. These categories, and their weightings, are: Green Statistics (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste management (18%), Water usage (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education (18%).

This year 516 universities from 74 countries took part, which is an increase from last year with 407 universities from 65 countries. Apart from the US, the UK, Japan, Spain, Italy, South America, Chinese Taipei and countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa, the 2016 results include universities from Algeria, Bahrain, Finlandia, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norwegia and Venezuela.

Think big

Within the framework of the “Model of the United Nations” course, two-day courses conducted by students of KazNU named after al-Farabi began in the walls of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Semey. During this time students of 11 classes had to discuss a number of significant issues aimed at strengthening and developing global values. During the meeting, issues of concern, such as the development of tourism in Kazakhstan, were also discussed.

Role of UN in modern world and problems of sustainable development

United Centre Regional Centre for Assistance at the Faculty of International Relations of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, which is a global hub on sustainable development of initiative of the United Nations Organization “Academic Impact” hold a round table “Role of UN in modern world and problems of sustainable development” dedicated to 71st anniversary of the UN. October 24 is celebrated as the day of the United Nations Organization from 1948. In 1971, General Assembly in its resolution recommended participant-countries to celebrate this day as National holiday.

Student conference “Model UN – New Silk Way”

From April 29 to May 1, 2016 in Almaty at the al-Farabi Kazakh National University the international student conference “Model UN New Silk Way 2016” is to take place. In the frames of the Conference following issues at each committee will be discussed:

  1. General Assembly: Reviewing the integration of religious minorities as a means of cultural diversity Reviewing the integration of religious minorities as a means of cultural diversity
  2. Security Council: New concepts to limit threats to international information security;
  3. ECOSOC: Unequal distribution of wealth within and among the countries in the framework of SDG-10;
  4. UNFPA: The impact of sexual and gender-based violence on reproductive health;
  5. FAO: Food security crisis in developing countries.

“Green bridge across generations” moves forward

On 11-12 April 2016 at the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi will be held the V International Student Forum “Green Bridge across generations” dedicated to initiatives of the President of Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev “Global Energy Strategy for Sustainable Development in the XXI Century” and the “Green Bridge”.

The main purpose of the forum is to involve students and young scientists in the process of promoting “green” economy, environmental initiatives and strengthening the basis for interaction and exchange of youth organizations in the implementation of resources and energy saving and sustainable development. This event was organized by the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development of the faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences and the Committee of Youth Organizations at al-Farabi KazNU.

High level of trust

On behalf of the rector KazNU. al-Farabi Galym Mutanov received a letter from the head of the UN program “Academic Influence” – UNAI Ramu Damodaran.

“I express my gratitude and deep gratitude to you and the whole team of KazNU for their contribution to solving global problems. The university is coping with the task entrusted to it, heading a global hub for sustainable development, “Ramu Damodaran said in a letter.

The initiative of the international authoritative organization unites over one thousand leading higher educational institutions and research centers from 120 countries of the world. KazNU uses the educational environment as a tool for solving global problems, carries out much work to promote the principles and initiatives of the UN and UNESCO, uniting the potential of scientists and students of universities of the world.

An international conference on “Promoting Transport and Transit Connectivity in Central Asia and Beyond” is taking place today in Almaty at the al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The conference was co-organized by the al-Farabi University’s Department of International Relations, Michigan State University and the Institute for Global Engagement, in partnership with the Almaty office of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies, with the support of the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Very important guests from UN have visited Al-Farabi University

At the al-Farabi Kazakh National University was a meeting of students and university professors with honorable guests, the United Nations’ representatives. A head of the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia Petko Draganov in the form of entertaining dialogue with the audience spoke about the current security threats and the role of preventive diplomacy in overcoming them. Also interesting lecture shared Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Kazakhstan Norimasa Shimomura.

The status of KazNU named after al-Farabi as a Sustainable Development Hub of UN Program (UNAI) Academic impact is extended for another two years

It was underlined during the global online dialogue with UN headquarter (New-York) involving other foreign Hubs of UN Program Academic impact and universities of Kazakhstan.

During the online teleconference, which is devoted to activities done by global Hubs of UN Program (UNAI) “Academic impact”, which is organized upon an initiative of KazNU named after al-Farabi, tasks for realization of 17 goals were considered in the field of sustainable development through education and scientific studies.

UN Under-Secretary General Christina Gayak, Director of UN Public Information Department, UNAI Program Director Ramu Damodaran, and Heads of UNAI Global hubs participated in discussions: on Human Rights at Sorbonne University (France) professor Yan Toma, on poverty reduction through education at Maharishta (India) architectural college professor Asmita Divekar, on national and regional networks of sustainable development of France Maria Cortes Puch, and also the representatives of universities of kazakhstan.

UN Under-Secretary General Christina Gayak announced the The status of KazNU named after al-Farabi as a Sustainable Development Hub of UN Program (UNAI) Academic impact is extended for another 2016-2018 years. «This decision was dictated by system advancements of university in the field of sustainable development, – Director of UN Public Information Department in Kazakhstan Vlastimil Samek and Director of Communication Department and Information of UNESCO Clusters Office in Almaty Sergey Karpov underlined. Al-Farabi University fruitfully cooperates with UN and UNESCO organizations for many years for many issues, and especially for sustainable development issues. Particularly, in KazNU the UNESCO Department on sustainable development and regional UNESCO hub on sustainable development under the UNI-TWIN program were opened”.

Al-Farabi – the philosopher of civilization or the idea of al-Farabi – the basis of the Alliance of Civilization

The 7th World Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) will be held in Baku on April 25-27, 2016. Recently in Istanbul, within the framework of the above-mentioned forum, a meeting of the working group of the Coordinating Committee of the UN Alliance of Civilizations was held, where the issue of proposals for the spread of the heritage of the great Turkic philosopher al-Farabi was discussed. On behalf of the Chairman of the Committee of the Alliance, Professor Bekir Karlyg, a delegation headed by the rector of the Kazakh National University was invited. al-Farabi G. Mutanov. The “Civilization Alliance” of the United Nations was established in 2004 at the 59th UN General Assembly, which was supported by 127 states with the goal of establishing conflicts and confronting global clashes in world civilization. The activities of the global forum of the “Alliance of Civilization” of the United Nations are directed against religious strife, against the influence of international communities in deepening the division of Western Muslims. Also, the organization seeks and makes an effort to bring the world civilization closer together and to this day has been formed as the center of the world cultural platform for important negotiations.

Ideas, goals and strategies of KazNU

In the KazNU. al-Farabi, the official meeting of the rector Galym Mutanov was held with the newly appointed head of the UNESCO cluster office in Kazakhstan, Andrey Shevelev. The key issues of the discussion were the actual areas of mutually beneficial cooperation between the university and UNESCO on education in the framework of the concept of sustainable development.

UN Resident Coordinator, Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Kazakhstan Norimas Shimoumara paid an official visit to al-Farabi KazNU.

During the meeting with the leadership of KazNU it was noted that throughout the period of independence the university actively involves students and scientists in the activities of the most authoritative international organization of the world – the UN. Cooperation with the UN is a priority for the university, which in 2011 was the first among the universities in Central Asia to join the UN Academic Influence Program (UNAI), established at the initiative of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The UNAI program unites the intellectual elite and students of the best universities in the world on the basis of the UN’s leading principles.

KazNU as the UN Global Hub has solemnly opened a special meeting at the UN Headquarters

KazNU. Al-Farabi became the UN Global Hub and entered the top 50 of the world’s best high-tech universities. Therefore, our national university was entrusted with the right to solemnly open a special meeting on the contribution of education and science to sustainable development at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Organized the International Round Table UNAI: “Green Economy –the innovative vector of development of modern science.”

 

UNAI of Sustainable Development, Scientific Research Institute (SRI) of the Problem of Ecology, the Center for Economic Research (CER) of the Higher School of Economics and Business and the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on September 18, 2015 was organized the International Round Table: “Green Economy –the innovative vector of development of modern science.” The round table was translated in the on-line platform G-Global.

During the discussion about the mechanisms of transition to a green economy, scientists – economists, physicists, chemists, geographers, environmentalists – exchangedviews on priority areas of a “green” modernization of the traditional model of the national economy of Kazakhstan and its main trends and stages, as well as recommendations for the successful implementation of “green” reforms.

The IV International ISOCARD conference “Silk Road Camels: Camelid Research for Sustainable Development” is held in KazNU. The public fund ISOCARD-Kazakhstan acted as a co-organizer of the event.

Representatives of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), OIE (World Organization for Animal Health), Springer (Germany), Etad (Saudi Arabia), Tofflon (China), Camelicious ( UAE), Katko (Kazakhstan-France), foreign and domestic scientists, teachers and students of the University.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of KazNU named after al-Farabi

Within the framework of the 5th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, “Dialogue of Religious Leaders and Politicians for Peace and Development” and the meeting of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, important events were held aimed at supporting initiatives in the fields of education, science, culture and sustainable development.

During the official opening of the new UN building in Astana, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of KazNU. Al-Farabi. The ceremony was presented by the rector of the University Academician Galym Mutanov who also awarded the honored guest with the great gold medal of Al-Farabi for his outstanding contribution to the cause of peace and harmony and cooperation between the UN and Kazakhstan and presented the certificate of an honorary member of the Friends of the KazNU al-Farabi. ”

The UN Secretary General noted the work of KazNU in the field of sustainable development

In Seoul (South Korea), the second UN forum on academic influence was held, which summed up the work over the past year and outlined the agenda for strategic development after 2015. The importance of this event is that it was held in the year of preparation for the adoption of the global strategy for sustainable development of the millennium, which will be determined by the UN General Assembly.

The event was attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, special adviser to the Secretary-General Jeffrey Sachs, heads of UN structural units, government representatives, Nobel laureates, heads of international and non-governmental organizations, rector of the world’s leading universities.

Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations K. Gayak delivered a lecture to students of KazNU

The UN Deputy Secretary General for Communications and Public Information, Christina Gayak, visited KazNU. During the visit, she gave a lecture to students and took part in a round table.

During her speech, Kristina Gayak, noted that KazNU has become a very important partner of the UN in promoting the ideas of an international organization. “Your university is the first among the universities of Central Asia to join the” Academic Impact “program, which aims to support the ten universally recognized principles of the United Nations concerning human rights, literacy, sustainable development, conflict resolution and preservation of the environment. Global Hub UNAI on Sustainability at Al Farabi KazNU has conducted for the first time an international teleconference on the perspectives of the education for sustainable development by linking the Global Hub UNAI on Sustainability with Global UNAI Hub at UN HQ in NYC with Al Farabi KazNU and several universities in Kazakhstan. This is a pilot project intended to popularize intellectual discourses on sustainable development goals and education for sustainable development utilizing an international ICT platform G-Global. Global Hub UNAI on Sustainability at Al Farabi KazNU intend to conduct s series of teleconferences in April and May 2015.

UNAI trainers from Al Farabi KazNU Introduced the Concept of Green Economy to students

 

February 13, 2015. Bishkek

Trainers from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) has developed a training module “The Introduction to Green Economy: Concepts and Challenges” within the framework of the series of activities of the Hub of United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) on Sustainability. The module has been envisioned to introduce the basic concepts of Green Economy to students and faculty not only in Kazakhstan, but also in all neighboring countries of Central Asia and possibly beyond. The first training session of the UNAI module was delivered at Arabayev Kyrgyz National University (KNU) and Karasayev Bishkek Humanities University (BHU) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The students and faculty learned about the work of the United Nations and its agencies on mitigating the impact of the climate change and recommendations on the “greening economies” including supporting energy saving and promoting alternative transportation and other measures.

Kazakhstan: Conference on New Paradigm of Sustainability was held in Almaty

November 05-07, 2014.

Almaty An international conference “New Paradigm of Sustainable Human Development: G-Global – a New Form of Global Dialogue” was organized by Al Farabi Kazakh National University (Al Farabi KazNU) jointly with the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, World Future Council and some other organizations. The focus of the conference – which was organized within the context of activities of Al Farabi KazNU as a Global Hub of United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Program on Sustainability – was on the most pressing issues of sustainable development goals (SDG) and sustainable development policies in the 21st century.

December 07, 2013. Mini Model UN “UN Security Council discussion of the Crisis Syria-Turkey” was organized by Al-Farabi KazNU with contribution from the Consulate General of the USA in Almaty and United Nations Information Centre (Almaty, Kazakhstan) in the context of UN «Academic Impact» Program.

December, 10-14 2013. International seminar on the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO ) “Competitiveness and International Trade in CENTRAL ASIA REGION “ was held at the Faculty of International Relations, al Farabi KazNU with contributions from prominent speakers such as Mr. Jacek Cukrowski , Director, Institute of Capacity Development UNIDO, Roman Mogilevsky UN expert, Serik Iskakov, PhD Insitute for economic research of MEBP and others.

December 3, 2013. The International Conference “Towards sustainable development through green economy” was organized by the Department of Energy and Ecology of Faculty of Geography at al-Farabi Kazakh National University jointly with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources of RK and the UNDP in Kazakhstan.

November 30, 2013. Model UN Program organized training for the forthcoming the «Model UN – New Silk Way» International Conference at Al Farabi KazNU. This event chaired by Dr. Rafis Abazov and Galiya Ibrayeva was held in the context of the UN «Academic Impact» Program involving participants from several universities in Almaty city and with contribution from the Consulate General of the USA and United Nations Information Center.
