Kazakh National University at al-Farabi
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) carried out many activities during January-April, 2014 in line with the tenets of the UN Academic Impact with emphasis on promoting sustainability through education. Some of the key activities were:
February 15, 2014. Mini-Model UN-ECOSOC conference “Renewed and Strengthened Global Partnership for the Development of Least Developed Countries” were held by the students of Al Farabi KazNU. Over the course of several sessions they discussed the major challenges for the implementation of SDG and RIO+20 agenda in the least developed countries with contribution from leading experts from the United Nations Information Center (UNIO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and some others.
March 03, 2014. UN Global Hub “Academic Impact” was opened in KazNU. The honored guests of this event were the first Permanent Representative of Republic of Kazakhstan in United Nations and Ambassador-at-large A.Arystanbekova, Representative of UN Department of Public Information in Republic of Kazakhstan V.Samek and the heads of diplomatic missions of foreign states in Almaty. The ceremony was opened by the Chancellor of University academician G.Mutanov. This event was dedicated to one of the most significant dates in history of our country-22 years of accession of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN.
March 07, 2014. Model UN training at Nazarbayev University was conducted by KazNU students. “We had a pleasure to meet with students of NU for training them and discussing. Also we showed them United Nations video materials and other information” said participants Medet Yessimkhanov and Laila Anesovna Ali.
March 11, 2014. Al-Farabi University Center for Cross Cultural Communication of FIR and British Council in Kazakhstan held collateral seminar “The Climate Change, Energy and Technology”. The aim of that round table was the experience exchanging in managing the actual projects in the field of climate changing and sustainable development, power production efficiency and renewable energy sources.
March 19, 2014. A first photo exhibition on Afghanistan entitled “Seeing a different Afghanistan” was organized by the MDP/Global Classroom program at Al Farabi KazNU presenting a series of pictures about everyday life of young people and students around Kabul city. The pictures were taken during an educational trip to Afghanistan by Prof. Rafis Abazov of Columbia University who is also a visiting professor at Al Farabi KazNU and who traveled to Kabul in late 2013 for discussing research and education cooperation between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan.
April 02, 2014. Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Miroslav Jenča conducted a working visit to KazNU. During the visit, Mr. Jenča held talks with students, UN Center under Al- Farabi staff and rector. Also students freely asked about issues of representation of the UN, international politics and diplomatic missions of the Head of UNRCCA. Special attention was paid to regional cooperation in fighting terrorism, extremism, drug-trafficking and organized crime as well as the initiatives of UNRCCA in this field and the possibility of further support by the KazNU side of the UN initiatives in Central Asia aimed at maintaining peace.
May 1-3, 2014. Model UN program presents the ”Model UN – New Silk Way”. In the context of UN “Academic Impact” program, the Model UN welcomes you to take part at the conference organized by al-Farabi KazNU, with the participation of Consulate General of the USA, Almaty; the United Nations Information Office and students from Afghanistan, Italy, India, Pakistan and other neighboring coutries. The conference will be held in four sections:
UN General Assembly: “Ensuring Access to Education for all”;
UN Security Council: “Afghanistan on track to building post – 2014”;
ECOSOC:”Trade and Tariffs”;
UN Human Rigths Council: “Protection against Domestic Violence”.
